Jesus’ Birthplace: What the Bible Means by “Inn” 耶穌的誕生之處:聖經所說的「inn」究竟是什麼意思?(Lk 2:7)

1️⃣ Luke uses the word “inn,” but not in the modern sense.

In Luke 2:7, the King James Version says there was “no room for them in the inn.”
However, the Greek word behind this translation is katalyma, not pandocheion.

Katalyma refers to a lodging place or guest space, often within a private home.
When Luke later describes a commercial inn in Luke 10:34, he uses a different word: pandocheion.

This shows that the “inn” in Luke 2 should not automatically be understood as a commercial inn in the modern sense.

2️⃣ “No room” means full, not rejection.

The text gives no indication of rejection, hostility, or discrimination.
It simply states that there was no available space in the lodging area.

This reflects a realistic situation during the census, when many people returned to their ancestral towns.

3️⃣ The manger points to a house, not a detached stable.

In first-century village homes, animals were often kept in the lower part of the house at night.
The presence of a manger indicates this lower living space within a household.

This was part of ordinary daily life, not a sign of abandonment or humiliation.

Conclusion / 結論

Jesus was born to faithful parents from an ordinary working-class background—not wealthy, but not destitute.

Scripture does not describe the economic or spiritual condition of the household that hosted His birth.
What the Bible does make clear is the faithfulness, obedience, and modest means of His parents, Mary and Joseph.

Jesus was not born into privilege, nor into despair.
He entered the world through faithful parents, within ordinary human circumstances, according to God’s will.

“Because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7, KJV)
