Jimmy Lau 2Co 6:2   For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.  It is funny that this portion of 2 Corinthians 6:2, “ behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation ”, is often quoted at the end of a gospel meeting to coerce unbelievers not to delay their salvation but to make a decision to obey the gospel straightaway. But Paul was addressing the Christians in Corinth who had believed the gospel when he made that statement. Hence, with reference to the immediate context, Paul was warning the Christians not to lose their salvation: “ We then, as workers together with him,  beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain ” (v.1). What does it mean by receiving the grace of God in vain? The “grace of God” refers to the gospel of Christ which they had received and were saved (Ephesians 2:8). T...

Jimmy Lau 1Co 5:6  Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?  In this chapter, Paul mentions a specific moral issue happening in the church at Corinth - someone was having his father’s wife; he was sleeping with his stepmother (v.1). Paul calls it fornication.   What did the church do about it? They bragged about it! “ And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you ” (v.2).   The attitude of the Corinthians was they “ were puffed up ”. The words seem to indicate that they were encouraging the sinner in his sinful way. It’s like giving him a thumb’s up and saying: “Wow, you got class.” Instead of being humiliated and covered with a sense of shame, they were encouraging it. Paul was flabbergasted. He said such kind of incestuous relationship would be considered taboo even by the world, yet the Corinthian Christians seemed accepting of it.   W...

Abner was a very capable soldier and administrator. Why would such a talented man stick with a useless Ishbosheth? One reason could be he knew only with Ishbosheth he would be the most powerful man in the kingdom. The weak Ishbosheth needed Abner. Abner was using Ishbosheth to achieve his ambition.   2.  Proud . His pride and self-esteem are apparent in his haughty answer to Ishbosheth (v.8). His answer to Ishbosheth is akin to saying this: “ I've always been loyal to your father's family and to his relatives and friends. I haven't turned you over to...
