Must Christians Unconditionally Forgive Unrepentant Non-Christians?

Subtitle: The Bible teaches us to love our enemies and not take revenge, but it does not teach “unconditional forgiveness.”

Jesus Clearly Connects Repentance with Forgiveness

“If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.”

Jesus’ teaching is clear: if the person repents, we should forgive.

Repentance is not a condition that can simply be omitted.

  Not Knowing the Gospel Does Not Mean Repentance Is Unnecessary

Jesus prayed on the cross:

“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

Yet Peter later still required these people to repent:

“Repent… for the forgiveness of your sins.”

Therefore, ignorance is a reason for compassion, but it is not a reason to remove the requirement of repentance.

God Does Not Exempt Non-Christians from Repentance Because They Do Not Know Him or His Truth

“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent.”

Non-Christians may not understand the truth, but God still requires everyone to repent.

Not Forgiving Does Not Mean Holding a Grudge or Seeking Revenge

The Bible commands Christians to love their enemies, pray for them, refrain from revenge, and overcome evil with good. (Matthew 5:44; Romans 12:17–21)

But “not holding a grudge” and “forgiving” are not the same thing.

When someone has not yet repented, we can refrain from hatred and revenge, continue to treat that person with kindness, and hope for his or her repentance.

Conclusion: The Bible Does Not Teach “Unconditional Forgiveness”

The biblical principle is clear:

不知道真理,需要憐憫;
Ignorance of the truth calls for compassion;

犯罪,需要悔改;
Sin calls for repentance;

After repentance, Christians must be willing to forgive.

“He is not a Christian, so he does not understand; therefore, no matter what he does, he should be unconditionally forgiven”—this is not what the Bible teaches.
