One of the most misused and misunderstood passages in the Bible is the narrative of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). This passage has often been used to claim that Jesus set aside God’s law and showed unconditional tolerance. Many believe Jesus ignored her sin and simply forgave her, even though the Law required death (Leviticus 20:10).
Did Jesus set aside the Law? A careful study reveals at least three key points:
First, the Law required at least two witnesses before execution (Deuteronomy 19:15; 17:6). The passage does not clearly present valid witnesses. Without them, execution would be illegal.
Second, the Law required both the man and the woman to be punished (Deuteronomy 22:22). Yet only the woman was brought forward. This shows the situation did not meet the requirements of the Law.
Third, Jesus’ statement, “He who is without sin…” was not a prohibition against judgment. Scripture clearly teaches that Christians must make proper judgments (John 7:24; 1 Corinthians 5:12-13; Galatians 6:1).
What did Jesus mean? He was exposing the hypocrisy of the accusers. They were guilty of the same sin. According to God’s Law, such individuals were not qualified to act as witnesses or carry out punishment.
When the accusers left, Jesus asked if anyone remained to condemn her. With no valid witnesses, legal condemnation could not proceed. Therefore, Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.”
However, this did not mean approval. Jesus added, “Go and sin no more.” He did not condemn her legally, but He clearly condemned her sin morally.
Jesus upheld the Law perfectly. He never set aside God’s law to show grace. Any interpretation that places grace above obedience to God’s law is false. Law and grace are not in conflict—God’s law remains righteous, and Jesus never violated it.
