Though it is characteristic of most people today to use these terms interchangeably, the scriptures very definitely differentiate them.

“For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword… piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit…” (Hebrews 4:12).

Since the sacred writers provided for “the dividing of soul and spirit,” we must also distinguish them if we are to understand biblical truth.

The word “spirit” (Greek: pneuma), when referring to man, denotes that part of us which does not die and survives the body.

It is given directly by God and is not produced by human generation (Hebrews 12:9; Acts 7:59).

THE WORD “SOUL” IN SCRIPTURE

聖經中「魂」的四種用法

1. As a synonym for “person” 

   作為「人」的同義詞

“And there were added… about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41)

「那一天，約添了三千人（原文：魂）。」（使徒行傳 2:41）

“Eight souls were saved…” (1 Peter 3:20)

「當時得救的只有八個人（魂）。」（彼得前書 3:20）

Here, “soul” simply means “people.”

這裡的「魂」就是指「人」。

2. As physical life shared with animals

   指與動物相同的「生命」

“He spared not their soul from death…” (Psalm 78:50)

「他沒有保全他們的性命（魂）不死…」（詩篇 78:50）

Here, “soul” refers to physical life that can die.

這裡的「魂」指的是會死亡的生命。

3. As the lower, natural (psychical) nature

   作為較低層、天然的（屬魂的）本性

“The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 2:14)

「屬血氣的人不領會神聖靈的事。」（哥林多前書 2:14）

“Natural” here comes from the same root as “soul” (psuche), meaning the soulish or psychological man.

“Thou wilt not leave my soul in Hades…” (Acts 2:27)

Its meaning depends on how the inspired writer uses it.

False teachings arise when people assign one fixed meaning to every occurrence.

Some claim “the soul never dies,” while others argue “the soul dies,” but both can misuse scripture.

The Bible shows that while some aspects of man die, the spirit does not.

“The spirit of man is not subject to death… it is the spirit leaving the body that constitutes death.”
