THE CROSS OF CHRIST
THE CROSS OF CHRIST
*Pang's sermon based on bro. Barry Hatcher's sharing about 30 years ago in Indonesia.
The Apostle Paul and the other apostles proclaimed the word of God and the crucified Christ. One who died, was buried and rose on the third day.
When we think about the death of Christ, what does the death of Christ teach us and what did Jesus accomplish in his death?
Firstly, Jesus’ death upon the cross did away with the old law. He did not take it away as though it was some ungodly and unrighteous thing but he fulfilled it. (Colossians 2: 14)
He did away with the Mosaic Law which divided the world among the Jews and Gentiles. (Ephesians 2: 14-15)
Secondly, Jesus died on the cross to establish His law. A new covenant, a better covenant as described in Hebrews 8:6.
The action of the death on the cross drew about the testament or the will of the testator. (Hebrews 9:16-17)
Jesus’ death on the cross took away the old law and brought into existence and into force His law, the Law of Christ. That is the New Testament.
Thirdly, Jesus died upon the cross to purchase the church. (Acts 20:28)
The church has been purchased by the blood of Christ and we are purchased by the blood through our obedience through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Fourthly, the cross of Christ appeases the wrath of God and reconciles us to God. God saw the world was in sin and that there was need for some means for men to be reconciled to Him and to appease his wrath against sinful men and Jesus shed His blood and be our propitiation. (Romans 3:23-25)
Finally, the death of Christ on the cross showed us God’s love for men. (Romans 5:6-8, John 3: 16-17)
We are to stand with our faith centrally focused on the cross of Jesus Christ for He died for all of us.
