The Personal Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Christians 聖靈親自內住在基督徒裡面

## 1. The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit Is Not “Through the Word”

聖靈的內住,不是「藉著神的話語」而內住

Some believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians “through the Word.” However, this is not the understanding accepted by Brother G. Although the Word of God is extremely important, the Word itself is not the Holy Spirit. The Spirit does not dwell in us indirectly through Scripture; rather, the Holy Spirit Himself personally indwells Christians.

有一種常見觀點認為,聖靈是「藉著神的話語(through the Word)」住在基督徒裡面。但這並不是 Brother G 所接受的理解。神的話語固然極其重要,但神的話語本身並不是聖靈。聖靈不是透過經文「間接」住在我們裡面,而是聖靈祂自己(personally)親自內住在基督徒裡面。

However, this does not mean that the Word of God is unimportant. Without God’s Word, Christians become hampered or blocked. This does not hinder the existence of the Spirit, but it hinders us from accomplishing the work and mission God has given us. Without understanding God’s will, a person cannot properly live the life God desires.

然而,這並不表示神的話語不重要。若沒有神的話語,基督徒會受到攔阻(hampered / blocked)。這種攔阻,不是妨礙聖靈存在,而是妨礙我們完成神交託給我們的工作與使命。因為若不知道神的旨意,人就無法正確地活出神要他活出的生命。

In this sense, the Word of God functions more like a tool, similar to a musical repertoire stored in the mind. Sheet music is not the music itself, but it enables a musician to perform music. Likewise, Scripture teaches us how to think, act, and obey God. The amount of Scripture one memorizes does not determine the “amount” or “strength” of the Spirit’s indwelling.

因此,神的話語更像是一種工具(tool),好像人心中的樂譜(repertoire in our mind)。樂譜本身不是音樂,但它幫助人奏出音樂。同樣地,神的話語幫助我們知道如何思想、如何行事、如何順服神。但經文的數量,不等於聖靈內住的「強度」。一個人不是因為背了很多經文,聖靈就更多地住在他裡面。

## 2. The Indwelling of the Spirit Is Received by Faith, Not by Sensory Evidence

聖靈的內住,是憑信心接受,而不是靠感官證明

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not proven by empirical evidence. Human senses cannot measure whether the Spirit dwells within us. The inability to feel or physically perceive His presence does not mean He is absent. In the same way, we cannot physically see God’s presence, yet this does not mean God is not with us.

聖靈的內住,不是靠五官經驗(empirical evidence)來證明的。人無法用肉體感官去測量聖靈是否住在自己裡面。感覺不到,不代表不存在。正如我們也無法用眼睛看見神的同在,但這不代表神沒有與我們同在。

Therefore, even if a person has no dramatic emotions, mystical experiences, or unusual sensations, the Holy Spirit will still truly dwell within that person. The indwelling of the Spirit is accepted by faith, not confirmed by feelings.

因此,一個人即使沒有強烈情緒、沒有神秘感受、沒有特殊經驗,聖靈仍然真實地住在他裡面。聖靈的內住,是憑著信心(by faith)接受神的應許,而不是靠感覺確認。

Although the Holy Spirit cannot be proven through the senses, His presence can be seen through a transformed life. Jesus said, “You will recognize them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:20). A person indwelt by the Spirit will gradually display a godly character and transformed life.

然而,雖然聖靈不能用感官被證明,我們卻能從生命中把祂活出來。主耶穌說:「憑著他們的果子,就可以認出他們來。」(太7:20)真正有聖靈內住的人,生命會漸漸顯出屬神的性情與改變。

Furthermore, the Holy Spirit is not an abstract force or merely a psychological condition. He is a complete divine Person. God is not a composite concept, but a complete and real Being. Therefore, Christians today possess the same complete Holy Spirit that the apostles possessed in the first century. The difference is not in the Spirit Himself, but in the different tasks and missions God has assigned in different ages.

此外,聖靈不是抽象力量,也不是一種心理狀態。祂是一個完整的位格(person)。神不是一個組合性的概念(composite),而是真實完整的存在。因此,今天的基督徒所擁有的聖靈,與第一世紀使徒所擁有的是同一位完整的聖靈,不是「比較少的聖靈」。差別不在聖靈本身,而在神賦予各時代不同的工作與使命。

## 3. The Holy Spirit Himself Is God’s Gift to Christians

聖靈本身,就是神賜給基督徒的禮物

The Holy Spirit is indeed a gift, but we must distinguish between “the Holy Spirit Himself as the gift” and “gifts given by the Spirit.” In the first century, the Spirit granted miraculous abilities such as tongues, healing, and miracles. However, the central gift Christians receive today is not miraculous power, but the Holy Spirit Himself.

聖靈確實是一份禮物(gift),但需要小心區分:「聖靈自己是禮物」與「聖靈所賜的能力(gift from/by/of the Spirit)」並不完全相同。第一世紀時,聖靈曾賜下說方言、醫病、行神蹟等特殊能力。但今天基督徒所領受的核心,不是那些神蹟能力,而是聖靈祂自己。

In other words, the phrase “the gift of the Holy Spirit” primarily refers to God giving the Holy Spirit Himself to those who obey Him. Although Christians today are not assigned apostolic miraculous works, this does not mean the Spirit’s power has diminished. Rather, God has assigned different purposes in different ages.

換句話說,「the gift of the Holy Spirit」最核心的意思,是神把聖靈自己賜給順服祂的人。因此,今天雖然我們沒有被賦予使徒性的神蹟工作,但這不代表聖靈能力減少,而是因為神今天沒有把那樣的任務交給我們。聖靈仍然是完整的、全能的,只是神在不同時代有不同安排。

## 4. The Holy Spirit Indwells After Obedience and Baptism

聖靈是在順服福音、受浸後內住

Scripture teaches clearly that the Holy Spirit indwells a person after obedience to the gospel and baptism.

聖經清楚指出,聖靈是在一個人順服福音、受浸之後內住。

Acts 2:38 says: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Here, “for the forgiveness of sins” carries the meaning of obtaining forgiveness.

《使徒行傳》2:38 說:「你們各人要悔改,奉耶穌基督的名受浸,叫你們的罪得赦,就必領受所賜的聖靈。」這裡「for the forgiveness of sins」的意思,更接近「為了得到(to obtain)」罪得赦免。

When sins are forgiven, a person enters a cleansed condition, making it fitting for the Holy Spirit to dwell within that cleansed person.

當人罪得赦免後,就進入一個被潔淨的狀態(clean condition),因此聖靈可以住在一個被洗淨的人裡面,這在邏輯上是非常合理的。

Acts 2:41 is also very important: “Those who had received his word were baptized.” This demonstrates that people could receive and understand the Word before baptism, yet the Spirit had not yet indwelt them. Only after obedience and baptism did they receive the Spirit.

而《使徒行傳》2:41 是非常關鍵的一節經文:「於是領受他話的人就受了浸。」(Those who had received his word were baptized.)這節經文證明,人可以在受浸之前就「接受(receive)」並理解神的話語,但聖靈仍尚未內住。直到他真正順服並受浸時,才領受聖靈。

This shows that the indwelling of the Spirit does not come merely from knowing God’s Word. A parrot may imitate Scripture but lacks cognitive ability, so the Spirit cannot dwell within it. Likewise, even if a person possesses great biblical knowledge, such as Khrushchev reportedly memorizing much of the New Testament, the Spirit still will not dwell in him if he refuses to obey God.

這也說明:聖靈的內住,不是單單因為「知道神的話」。鸚鵡可以模仿聖經,但牠沒有認知能力(cognitive ability),因此聖靈不會內住。同樣地,即使一個人擁有大量聖經知識,甚至像赫魯雪夫(Khrushchev)那樣幾乎能背下整本新約,如果他不順服神,聖靈仍不會住在他裡面。

The true issue is not how much one knows, but whether one obeys. If a person knows God’s Word yet refuses to obey it, the Holy Spirit simply will not indwell that person.

所以真正的關鍵,不是知道多少、記得多少,而是是否順服(obey)。如果人知道神的話語卻不去行,聖靈根本不會內住在他裡面。

## 5. The Indwelling of the Spirit Is Related to One’s Spiritual Condition

聖靈的內住與人的屬靈狀態有關

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit does not mean a person may continue living in sin. If a person deliberately continues in sin without repentance, the Holy Spirit will depart.

聖靈內住之後,並不代表人可以持續活在罪中。若一個人故意犯罪、長久不悔改,聖靈會離開他。

David prayed, “Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me” (Psalm 51:11), showing that God’s Spirit can indeed depart from a person. Ephesians 4:30 warns believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit, and Hebrews 10:26 warns against deliberate sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth.

大衛曾禱告:「不要從我收回你的聖靈。」(詩51:11)這表明神的靈是可能離開人的。《以弗所書》4:30 也警告信徒:「不要叫神的聖靈擔憂。」《希伯來書》10:26 更說:「我們得知真道以後,若故意犯罪,贖罪的祭就再沒有了。」

Therefore, whether the Spirit continues to dwell within a person is closely connected to that person’s spiritual condition. If a person lives in uncleanness and rebellion without repentance, the Spirit will no longer continue dwelling within him.

因此,聖靈是否持續住在一個人裡面,與他的屬靈狀態(spiritual condition)密切相關。若人活在污穢與悖逆中,不願悔改,聖靈就不會繼續住在其中。

At the same time, the Holy Spirit brings tremendous comfort to Christians. Romans 8:10–11 teaches that the Spirit gives spiritual life, while Romans 8:26–27 teaches that the Spirit intercedes for us because He understands our weaknesses and unspoken groanings.

另一方面,聖靈也帶給基督徒極大的安慰。《羅馬書》8:10-11 說,住在我們裡面的靈,會使我們「必死的身體又活過來」,這是一種屬靈的復活(spiritual resurrection)。而《羅馬書》8:26-27 又說,聖靈會替我們代求(intercedes for us),因為祂知道我們的軟弱與內心深處的嘆息。

What matters most is not eloquence, but whether our hearts are truly directed toward God. The Spirit understands our struggles, pain, and sighs too deep for words, which becomes a great comfort to believers.

所以,真正重要的,不是我們是否很會表達,而是我們的心是否向著神。聖靈知道我們的掙扎、痛苦與無法說出口的歎息,這是基督徒極大的安慰。

## 6. Conclusion: The Holy Spirit Truly Dwells in Those Who Obey God

結論:聖靈是真實住在順服神的人裡面

In conclusion, the Holy Spirit is not an abstract concept, emotional experience, or merely the influence of Scripture in the human mind. The Holy Spirit is a real divine Person who personally indwells those who obey the gospel and are baptized into Christ.

總結來說,聖靈不是抽象概念,也不是情緒作用,更不是單單藉著神的話語存在於人心中。聖靈是一位真實的位格(Person),親自(personally)住在順服福音、受浸歸主的人裡面。

The Word of God is extremely important because it helps believers grow, mature, and understand God’s will. However, the Word itself is not the Holy Spirit. The indwelling of the Spirit is not based on feelings, but on faith in God’s promises.

神的話語非常重要,因為它幫助我們成長、成熟、明白神的旨意;但神的話語本身不是聖靈。聖靈的內住,也不是靠感官去感受,而是憑著信心相信神的應許。

Therefore, a person truly indwelt by the Holy Spirit is not merely someone who knows truth, but someone willing to obey and live out truth. The Spirit does not dwell in knowledge alone, but in those who are willing to obey God.

因此,一個真正有聖靈內住的人,不只是「知道真理」,更是願意順服真理、活出真理。因為聖靈不是住在知識裡,而是住在願意順服神的人裡面。

## Note: Scholarly Views on “The Gift of the Holy Spirit” in Acts 2:38

附註:關於《使徒行傳》2:38「the gift of the Holy Spirit」的學者觀點

A.T. Robertson interpreted “the gift of the Holy Spirit” in Acts 2:38 most directly as referring to the Holy Spirit Himself, rather than merely gifts given by the Spirit. He was quoted in Thy Word Is Truth as saying: “The gift consists in the Holy Spirit himself.”

A.T. Robertson 對《使徒行傳》2:38 的解釋相當直接,他認為「the gift of the Holy Spirit」是指「聖靈自己」,而不只是聖靈所賜下的能力或恩賜。在 Thy Word Is Truth 網站所引用的內容中,他被引述說:「The gift consists in the Holy Spirit himself.(這份禮物就是聖靈自己。)」

Although Thayer did not leave a complete verse-by-verse commentary on Acts 2:38, many Greek scholars cite his grammatical approach, understanding “of the Holy Spirit” as an appositional genitive, meaning: gift = the Holy Spirit Himself.

Thayer 雖然沒有留下完整逐節註解,但許多希臘文研究者引用他的文法觀點,認為這裡的 “of the Holy Spirit” 屬於「同位語所有格(appositional genitive)」,意思就是:gift = the Holy Spirit himself。

As for Alexander Campbell, no direct original commentary on Acts 2:38 was located, so one should not overstate his exact wording. However, the broader Restoration Movement generally understood the central gift today not as miraculous first-century powers, but as the genuine indwelling of the Holy Spirit Himself. Thus, despite different approaches, these viewpoints broadly point toward the same conclusion: Acts 2:38 most naturally refers to God giving the Holy Spirit Himself to obedient believers.

至於 Alexander Campbell,沒有找到他直接逐句註解《使徒行傳》2:38 的原始引文,因此不能過度宣稱。但 restoration movement(基督的教會)整體神學方向,普遍傾向認為:今天基督徒領受的核心,不是第一世紀神蹟性的恩賜,而是聖靈自己真實的內住。因此,這幾條路線雖然角度不同,但大致都傾向同一個方向——《使徒行傳》2:38 的重點,更接近「神把聖靈自己賜給順服福音的人」。
