The Authority of Scripture and Bible Translation
I. What do people believe in this life
1. Scripture
聖經
Objective – the only authoritative standard
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God. (2 Tim 3:16)
2. Tradition
傳統
Subjective
Passed down from generation to generation
Catholic authorities
Pope
教宗Bible
聖經Traditions
3. Experience
經驗
Subjective
Dreams, feelings, assumptions
Need to be adjusted by Scripture
All subjective standards must be calibrated by the Bible
4. Reason
理性
Subjective
If we misunderstand the Scripture, we will reason wrongly.
e.g. we are not saved by works — self-merits or Old Testament regulations
e.g. we are not saved by faith only, but by obedient works taught in the New Testament
If the presupposition (預設前提) is wrong, the reasoning will be wrong.
II. Translation
1. The Bible is verbally and plenarily inspired (2 Tim 3:16)
That's why it is objective.
No man finalized the Bible; every word was inspired by God.
God is the final author.
2. Every translation has its limitations
Good translations
KJV
NKJV
ASV
NASB 1995
ESV
Even NASB has some translation issues.
But the Bible has been preserved with extreme care through human scholarship and the providence of God.
We must study and compare those good translations.
The original autographs were inspired by God, but translations may differ in wording.
3. NKJV is used in this class
Because NASB translates God's name YHWH as LORD, which may cause confusion.
“Lord” can refer to the Father, Jesus, or a human master.
「Lord」
Three names of God
YHWH: personal name of God (Yahweh / Jehovah)
Elohim: title meaning God
Elohim:
Adonai: title meaning Lord, emphasizing authority
Adonai:
KJV may not make mistakes often, but sometimes it is not precise enough.
Example: Acts 9:7 and Acts 22:9
9:7 they heard — the men traveling with him heard the voice
22:9 they did not hear — they did not understand the voice
They do not contradict each other because the word “hear” has two meanings.
In Acts 9:7, hear means physical hearing.
In Acts 22:9, hear means understanding.
In the Chinese Union Version, these verses are translated clearly so readers are not confused.
